Biography:

Mr. Granwell has practiced in the area of international taxation for nearly 50 years. He is of counsel to Holland & Knight LLP, resident in their Washington, DC office; his  private client practice encompasses representing high-net-worth individuals on cross-border income, estate and gift tax planning, compliance and controversy. 

Mr. Granwell also is active in advising financial institutions and their clients on international tax enforcement initiatives, with special emphasis on the U.S. Department of Justice Swiss Bank Program, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act and the Common Reporting Standard.

He also conducts an active administrative practice, regularly representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service and the US Treasury Department (including  conducting competent authority proceedings, advising taxpayers on voluntary disclosures, assisting clients in obtaining regulatory changes and tax rulings and advising clients on tax legislation matters).

From 1981 through 1984, Mr. Granwell was the International Tax Counsel and Director, Office of International Tax Affairs,  the US Department of the Treasury. In that capacity, Mr. Granwell was the senior international tax advisor at the Treasury Department and was responsible for advising the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy on legislation, regulations and administrative matters involving international taxation and directing the US tax treaty program.

Mr. Granwell is a former Chair of the STEP Mid Atlantic Branch and current Webinar Czar of STEP USA. He  is a frequent commentator and lecturer on international tax matters.
